Reclaimed from the swamps that formed the confluence of the Rhône and Arve rivers as recently as 1850, the area centered on the diamond-shaped Plaine de Plainpalais is now home to contemporary art galleries, traveling circuses, weekly markets, local and regional media, the sprawling Université de Genève, and remnants of a late-19th-century industrial past.
