Twisting down the entire length of the Kvarner Bay on its western side is Cres, whose latest claim to fame is that it is the largest of all Croatian islands. For many years, squat neighbor Krk was awarded this distinction, but recent recalculations have rectified a long-standing error. Cres has been known as one of the most unspoiled islands in the Adriatic for a long time. More difficult to get to than Krk, and with a wilder and more rugged topography, Cres is quite frankly a delight. Its natural stretches are punctuated with olive groves and tiny towns and villages that remain authentic for the most part.
