Cruise to Alaska - fishing excursions - not through cruise ship?

We are going on the NCL Joy cruise ship with ports in Ketchikan, Juneau, and Icy Strait Point. We would like to go salmon fishing where we could ship the fish home. Any suggestions for a fishing guide?

Welcome to Fodors . . . you might want to post your question on the United States forum. Many Fodorites who know about those locations in Alaska, never or hardly ever post on the Cruise board.

(I ssume you are asking about a cruise next year . . . )

Alaska cruises MAY open up in July. You'll also have to factor in how you can get to and from your turnaround port, if it's open.

But stay tuned. It's possible the "No Sail Order" could be extended. I sure wouldn't make final payment if you don't have to.

If you haven't been on Cruise Critic, I'd start on their forums (aka Boards) . There are Boards for cruise lines and for destinations ( Ports of Call). You might also find a "Roll Call" for your particular date.

They also post occasional news reports

When we went salmon fishing in Alaska we stayed at a fishing camp in Kenai, bought our salmon fishing permits, got up and left to fish with our fuide at 4am. We were able to ship our fish home. How could you ever do all of this this from a cruise ship?

There are a number of independent operators advertising short fishing charters from Ketchikan for cruise ships.

My first (fall) trip to Ketchikan there was salmon fishing happening in all the streams and inlets around town.

We didn’t go as far south as Ketchikan. Good to know this.
